Why LED Lighting Pays Off

Long life, low consumption and quick payback — why LED ends up cheaper than a cheap bulb.

An LED bulb looks more expensive at first than an ordinary incandescent or energy-saving bulb. But the price tag is only the start of the story: the real cost includes the electricity and how often you replace it over several years.

Consumption is the main difference. For the same brightness, an LED uses 5–10 times less energy than an incandescent bulb. An old 60 W bulb is replaced by an LED of about 8–9 W with the same light. Across a whole home or office, that is a noticeable difference on the monthly bill.

Lifespan is the second big advantage. A quality LED runs 25,000–50,000 hours against roughly 1,000 hours for an incandescent bulb. For a high ceiling, a stairwell or a production floor, where replacing is awkward, this saves not just bulbs but labour and time.

There is also the matter of heat: an incandescent bulb spends most of its energy on heat rather than light. An LED barely warms up, which lowers fire risk and, in summer, the load on air conditioning.

In the end an LED usually pays back its premium within a year, and after that it starts to save. This durability logic is exactly what sits behind our "For Long Life" principle. In the Electrica Group catalogue you will find LED solutions for the home, the office and production, all built to last.
