IP (Ingress Protection) is a two-digit code that tells you how well a luminaire is protected from dust and water. The first digit is protection against dust and solid objects (0–6), the second against water (0–8). The higher the numbers, the stronger the protection.
IP20 is for dry, indoor spaces: protected against touch by fingers, but not against water. It suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
IP44 is protected against splashing water from any direction. This is the minimum for a bathroom (the zone away from water), a kitchen sink area, and a covered balcony.
IP65 is fully dust-tight and protected against water jets. It is the standard choice for outdoors, facades, garages, warehouses and production. IP67 and IP68 withstand even immersion — for pools, floor-recessed and underground luminaires.
The rule is simple: dry room — IP20, damp zone — IP44, outdoors and production — IP65+. When in doubt, go one class higher; over time it is cheaper. In the Electrica Group catalogue every luminaire lists its IP class, and our specialists will help you choose the right one for your conditions.
