LED Strip and Profile: How to Choose and Install

Brightness per metre, 12 or 24 V, IP, power supply and an aluminium profile — how to get even, long-lived light from a strip.

LED strip is best for indirect and accent light — a ceiling cornice, a kitchen work surface, a mirror, shelves and stairs. Laid correctly, a strip gives soft, even light with no glaring dots.

The first thing is brightness in lumens per metre and the diode density. The more diodes per metre, the smoother the light, without "dots". For task light take a brighter strip; for decor, a softer one.

On voltage, 24 V strip is preferable for long runs: at 12 V the light dims toward the far end of a long line (voltage drop). Feed long runs from both ends or split them into sections.

For a wet zone choose an IP65 strip; a dry room is fine with IP20. An aluminium profile is almost essential: it draws heat away, extending life, and gives a finished, tidy look.

Take a power supply with headroom and the right voltage (12/24 V). In the Electrica Group catalogue the strip, profile and power supply are matched to work together — true to our "For Long Life" principle, and our specialists will calculate the metreage and power you need.
